Name: Melodie Nicholson
Locality: Boogie Down Bronx, NY, USA
Color: Liquid
Vitamin Orange: Necessary for survival and/or will go right through the bloodstream, breathing life into the body.
The Story: Music was ingrained in Melodie almost from birth, and when it comes to music, the apple did not fall far from the tree. Her mother was a singer
who passed on the gift to her at a young age.
“I had 8-tracks and vinyl’s before I had anything else. I loved it.
Music has always been a big part of my life,” Melodie shares. It was the greatness of Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Kim Burell, Aretha Franklin
and Gladys Knight that she took in growing up, later attending the prestigious LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts to learn the essentials of honing her mighty talent.
It was not until her attendance at Five Towns College in
Long Island, NY for voice where the songstress came up with a great idea. One
day, Melodie needed a background band for a show she was doing, and she assembled some
classmates together to create what is now known as the band/experience “Soulgasm.” As she
puts it, “I’ve been lucky enough in my living to meet a lot of extremely gifted
people. And everyone that has shared their time and talent with me, be it one
or twenty, has been a blessing.”
Melodie went to work, releasing her first EP, Soulgasmic, in June of 2012. The collection of songs shows promise for the rising
star, who wrote most of the tracks on the release from personal
experience. “I’ve written songs to people, because of people. Sometimes folks
don’t want to listen when I speak. So I’ll write a song and invite them to a
show. Then [I’ll] sing it!!! After I’m done I’d be like ‘Can ya hear me now?’”
Where 2013 is concerned, this unsigned talent plans for domination via extensive
promotion and live shows. “I’m believing God for 2013 to be my year. And the
God I serve never, ever fails.”
Coloring Outside The Lines Because: For
those who have never had a Soulgasm, the truth is evident: there is
no equal. The video is proof that amidst the ardent excitement of
the audience, Melodie’s band is on point, and her bass range is unconventional
(8:57/11:30)! In an age of one hit wonders and gimmicks, this soloist takes the long lost avenue to success--talent.
Think: limbo stick (i.e. How low can her voice go?); chicken,
mashed potatoes, biscuits, collard greens-- soul food; e-cigarette (healthy
alternative after a “Soulgasm”); Fame (the original); church.
