It's about time to get to know the musical collective, Phony PPL. The Brooklyn crew has been rocking live shows all around the world, but never forgets to take it back to their own doorstep. Phony PPL has a new album called Yesterday's Tomorrow, but staunch phonies know about their first release of Phonyland in 2012. Since then, they've performed with The Roots, Theophilus London, and released numerous solo projects.

Elijah Rawk (guitarist) and Sheriff PJ (rapper) took the time to explain 5 factoids that will put you in the know to this upcoming act.

1) The name "Phony PPL" isn't what it seems. Their name is not literal; rather, "It's about phonics. It's like a symphony in six people," Elijah says of the band.

2) They met in school, but that's not the whole story... "The three of us were on a basketball team, and another three of us were on a basketball team..." Elijah says. "Then Kobe came in!" PJ added. "Nah, one of us fell and kinda hurt his leg or whatever, so we all felt bad, so we were hanging out the next day. Living life. And then we all realized we all played instruments. And we started working on music," he continued.

But all jokes aside, PJ concludes, "The real story is, it's a friend thing. We all knew each other, going to school."

3) They're work has been feature-less. "It wouldn't have been natural," Elijah says about not having features on their releases. However, they've been known to use input from kin musicians, rappers, and family to the band. Keeping the musicality within the band contributes to their uniqueness, a staple quality of their sound.

4) No type...of genre. Phony PPL has elements of R&B, Hip-hop, soul, jazz, and more, but at the end of the day, they claim none of it. "What we do is music, we don't do anything else," PJ states. Elijah adds with the analogy, "Artists generally don't have to explain their paintings. They might give you a synopsis. [Like] 'I call this one, "Oatmeal on Sunrise,"' and you're just supposed to interpret it. That's what we do. We put out songs and that's all the explanation you need."

5) They are true to the craft. Phony PPL makes the music they want to make. Elijah says, "One thing I like about music today [is that] there are so many different types of music. Music is so saturated that you have to be doing something different. I think it makes it easy for us because not a lot of bands do exactly what they want to do, and people are starting to like it."
