Name: Kimbra
Locality: New Zealand
Crayon Color: Baby Blue: Something old, something new, something borrowed...
Her first singles, “Settle Down” and “Cameo Lover” didn’t play long on Triple J radio before blogger Perez Hilton and Rolling Stone commented on her work. After a few million YouTube views and counting for the “Settle Down” video (right now 5 million and counting), Kimbra jumped in notoriety for being featured on Gotye’s hit worldwide single, “Somebody That I Used To Know.” The single went three times platinum in New Zealand and eight times platinum in Australia.
The word was out on Kimbra, and when she released her album through Warner Brothers in Australia, simply entitled Vows, it went platinum. As for the US? Last October she released her esteemed EP entitled Settle Down. It features the songs, “Settle Down,” “Limbo,” “Cameo Lover,” and a cover of Nina Simone's “Plain Gold Ring.” She is currently working on her debut album in the states, slated for spring 2012.
Coloring Outside The Lines Because: Kimbra is a throwback! She makes you twist and clap your hands, and wear tulle dresses with bows (the perfect listener bridesmaid). However, it’s not just old jazz from the greats that you will hear from her. It’s an creative, original, bright, and spunky turn on the classic subject of marriage.
Think: Rainbows, kaleidoscope full of hearts and stars, merging roads, sprinklers, hot air balloons, experimental sound effects without names, the electric slide, Vera Wang.
Propers: Rip it Up; Entertain Me; Marketwire;
