If you haven't heard of Kirby Lauryen, you need to. This songbird is sweeping YouTube up with her original songs, simply performed with vocals and piano. One could call Kirby Lauryen a singer/songwriter, but it would do well to put "author" on the bill as well. For the Memphis, Tennessee bred songstress' songs clearly tell tales.
1) Kirby backed up her skills with an alma mater. Kirby attended the Berklee College of Music but left to try to make it in the music haven of Atlanta, GA.
2) The girl has some accolades under her belt. With persistence she worked her way from the ground (or from the underground), up, winning Budweiser's Battle For The Crown and Memphis' Next Generation Soul Singer by WDIA Memphis radio, opening for Anthony Hamilton, and getting a co-sign from Jennifer Hudson for her YouTube cover of "Where You At."
3) She's persistent, and disciplined too! Kirby is taking a leap, writing a song on her YouTube channel and posting it every day. She's already up to 143! That's about 10 albums worth of material! Check out her YouTube page.
4) She drops tangible material for her fans on the regular. The songstress has already dropped two EP's this year alone. The first one, The Introduction, was released in February, and the second one, Risk It All, was released in April. The songwriter says that the latter is about "how Risking It All for what you love can ultimately lead to victory, but not without a cost."
5) She's friends with the English language. "My goal is to make soul music cool once again, 13-year-olds and 17-year-olds singing stories instead of fragments," she states. Well, one complete thought describes her perfectly: Kirby Lauryen is "what's next."
