5 FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT UK SENSATION BIRDY

Have you heard the word? Birdy's the word on the street, and her self-titled first release came out already overseas. To all of us awaiting her to drop her debut in the US next week, and especially if you haven't heard, you know, the word...lol, here's five things you should know about the talented young singer.

1) Jasmine van den Bogaerde, aka, Birdy, is 15 years old! And while people may question the material shes singing at such a young age, she thinks differently. "Those subjects are what brings the most emotion out of me. I don't think you have to experience them to understand them and sing about them," she tells BBC Breakfast.

2) She's an Open Mic Queen: Birdy gained cred for trying her hand at 2008's Open Mic UK at the tender age of 12; for penning the self-written tune, "So Be Free," the hummingbird won the contest, and is now signed to the Warner Music/Atlantic label.

3) Her album is full of covers! Although she's slick with the pen, her first album showcases her voice in covers like "Skinny Love," originally by Bon Iver, and "1901" originally by The Pheonix.

4) She's called Birdy because..."It's from when I was younger and my parents used to feed me, I opened my mouth so wide I looked like a little bird!"

5) Birdy sings and plays the piano, and her voice is soulful like Adele, with the strong belting yodel quality of Florence Welch, with a sort of operatic vibrato.

Birdy comes out in the US and Canada on March 20.
