Name: Aaradhna
Locality: Wellington, New ZealandCrayon Color: Rustic Red, love shade.
The story: The soulful Aaradhna started off with a very cultural upbringing. The starlet was the creation of a Samoan mother and Indian father, so it was no surprise that they played Bollywood movies in the house. "We would watch Bollywood movies, plus my dad used to sing, so he would take us to his concerts," she says. "My mom, she also sings as well; she writes her own Samoan gospel music, and she used to play on the guitar, singing, and we'd sing along with her."
Writing her first mature tune "Do You Love Me? Do You Love Her?" at 10 showed spunk; as at the tender age of 13, the songstress was complimented by her peers for a rendition of Monica's "For You I Will" at a talent show. But it wasn't until 19 when a chance meeting with Danny Leaosavaii from Dawn Raid Entertainment started to light things up. "Danny came down to Wellington from Auckland, and he wanted to get his hair braided by my Auntie [and] my cousin. When he came over, they called me up. I came over so I could meet him and so I could see what I could make of him. He told me to sing and I sang and he said, 'Were gonna hook you up to record some music and see where it goes from there.' I recorded my stuff and they were like, 'How do you feel about a contract?' And I was like, 'Sweet!'"
Aaradhna got down to business. Her debut album I love You garnered mass appeal. Her follow up, Sweet Soul Music, showed many of her Western predecessors up. From a girl who listened to Monica, the Beatles, Sam Cooke and SWV came a soul that knew no boundaries. As Aaradhna prepares for her third yet-to-be titled album, it's of no surprise she will be talking about love and life on the tracks. Showcasing the good, bad, and ugly means this release promises to be the most revealing yet. "When I was young I didn't really understand what I was talking about," the singer reveals. "[This album] is a bit more grown up music."
Coloring Outside The Lines Because: Aaradhna applies the warmth of her spirit into her songs. Her songs are timeless, worldwide. Even without a studio tweaking is a voice with the singing in the shower echo, that sharpness. Her originals captivate, sparking whatever emotion the song called for—perfectly transferred to the listener. She could sing just about anything (the alphabet backwards for example), and make you want to sing along.
Think: Day-off kick back soundtrack; night time outdoor concert; family; Love letter; hot cocoa; mint candy; gathering of people; group of eclectics with guitars singing the night away to classics i.e. the "cypher." The river, waterfall, beach, or scenic aqua setting; truth.
